The "Zijin Cao Volunteer Service Team" was established in 1994. By 2024, the number of registered volunteers had grown to 22,984, with cumulative service time reaching one million hours. In 2016, The Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre Victims by Japanese Invaders was designated as a "National Demonstration Unit for Promoting Volunteer Service in Public Cultural Facilities in the Spirit of Lei Feng" by seven central authorities, including the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Central Civilization Office. Concurrently, the "Zijin Cao Volunteer Service Workstation" was established, forming a structure of "central station + branch teams."

The Zijin Cao Volunteer Service Team, guided by the principles of "strong organizational development, efficient management and operation, enriching cultural activities, and positive social evaluation," is integrating social resources and mobilizing diverse forces to build a volunteer service brand and platform characterized by social engagement, project-based operation, distinctive features, and international outreach.

The Zijin Cao Volunteer Service operates through a project-based model, ensuring "professionalized service teams, refined service content, and standardized service management." Currently, volunteer service activities at the Memorial Hall encompass "three major categories and eight service roles," including "social education, professional services, and auxiliary management," with specific roles such as "guided tours, civilized guidance, cultural performances, language translation, cultural relicresearch, care and assistance services, publicity and promotion, and team support."

The Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre Victims by Japanese Invaders and its volunteer service initiatives have been honored with numerous accolades, including the National Lei Feng Volunteer Service "Four 100" Advanced Model Award for Best Volunteer Service Organization, the National Lei Feng Activity Demonstration Site, the Jiangsu Lei Feng Advanced Model Award, the Jiangsu Top Ten Youth Volunteer Service Projects, Silver Award at the Third Jiangsu Volunteer Service Exhibition, Bronze Award at the Second Jiangsu Volunteer Service Exhibition, the Nanjing Outstanding Volunteer Organization, and the Nanjing Outstanding Volunteer Service Project for Public Cultural Facilities.

The "Zijin Cao Volunteer Sharing and Exchange Meeting and Zijin Cao Cultural Ambassador Launch Ceremony" was held to promote the spirit of volunteerism and disseminate Zijin Cao culture.

The themed activity “Learning the Spirit of Lei Feng and Showcasing Volunteer Excellence” was organized, featuring: the oath-taking ceremony for young volunteers, historical narratives shared by descendants of survivors, and relayed explanations by international volunteers, bringing the contemporary essence of the Lei Feng Spirit to life through concrete action.

Volunteers also participate in major commemorative educational activities, such as World Book Day on April 23, the Anniversary of the Outbreak of the Nationwide War of Resistance on July 7, Japan's Surrender Day on August 15, the Victory Day of the War of Resistance on September 3, and Martyrs' Memorial Day on September 30.

At the lounge in the concluding hall of the "Nanjing Massacre Exhibit," Zijin Cao volunteers organized a reading event titled "Voices of Remembrance." Interacting with visitors, they engaged in immersive readings of excerpts from The Diaries of John Rabe (Youth Edition) and The Diary of Minnie Vautrin, using ritualized educational methods to allow history to resonate through sound.

Members of the Zijin Cao Volunteer Recitation Troupe held a recitation event titled "Voices of Remembrance" at the Memorial Hall, reading excerpts from over ten works from the War of Resistance period, including Peace Bell Ringing at Jiangdong Gate and I Say These Are the Last Tears.
