Warm Visit in the Cold Winter
On November 23th, survivors of the Nanjing Massacre Chen De-shou, Gao Ru-qin and Yang Cui-ying were visited by the caring people from all sectors of society, including Mr. Wang Jun – deputy director of Nanjing Civil Affairs Bureau, Mr. Shi Pengcheng – deputy director of the memorial hall, and staff members of Nanjing Assistance Association for Victims of the Japanese invasion of China.
Ms Gao Ru-qin turns 84 this year. Back in the war, her maternal grandmother was shot dead by the Japanese soldier and her mother’s leg injured.
“I’m in good health. Thank you for visiting me. I’m glad that there are many people caring the survivors in the society,” said Ms Gao,
Mr Chen De-shou is 86 years old and he is still hale and hearty.
In 1937, his father was stabbed to death by Japanese’ bayonet. Since that year, his father became a forever sight from the back in his memory.
Ms Yang Cui-ying is still sound at 94 years old, and doesn’t have many ailments.
During the Massacre, her grandfather, father, younger brother and her cousin were all killed by the Japanese troops.
She said, “Every time I think of this piece of history, I couldn't restrain my tears. Do cherish the life in peace.”
Caring the Survivors, We Are on the Way
- Nanjing Assistance Association for Victims of the Japanese invasion of China was established in August, 2004, to raise aid funds and mobilize a wide range of social forces to assist survivors that live in difficulties;
- The oral history of survivors of Nanjing Massacre was excavated for salvage;
- Survivors were organized to travel to more than 10 cities in Japan and in the United States to attend testimony rallies…
The Association has been thinking about the survivors and actively organizing them and their families to participate in various activities. The Association uses these activities to give full play to the role of survivors as witnesses of history and to educate the younger generation to remember history and to cherish peace. At the same time, the Association is also trying to dig out clues to survivors so as to do a good job in excavating and sorting this period of human history of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders.
