Institute for National Memory and International Peace Studies
Institute for National Memory and International Peace Studies (formerly known as the Institute of Nanjing Massacre History and International Peace) was jointly established by the Publicity Department of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee, the Publicity Department of the CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee, and Nanjing University. It was founded on November 10, 2015, and officially commenced operations on March 1, 2016, at the Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre Victims (by Japanese Invaders). The Institute is among the first batch of key high-end think tanks in Jiangsu Province and an inaugural source think tank of the China Think Tank Index (CTTI). It is also the first new-type think tank in China established by a cultural and museum institution.

Distinctive Strengths
Centered on research into national memory, the Institute adopts a dual focus on patriotic education and international peace studies, pursuing a professional and practice-oriented development path in service of the strategic vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind. The Institute is supported by an interdisciplinary, professional, and high-level team of experts, and has produced policy-oriented research outcomes in areas such as studies of national ceremonies, legislation related to publicity, ideology, and culture, and international peace education. It operates the Zijin Cao International Peace School as a practical platform, delivering the “A Lesson Before Going Abroad” political education program for students prior to studying abroad, and organizing the “International Peace Camp” for overseas participants. These initiatives have become flagship programs for youth exchanges between China and other countries within the think tank.
Honors and Awards
2018: National Anthem Legislations and Policy Recommendations was selected as one of the Top Ten Best Practice Cases of Jiangsu Think Tanks for 2018.
2018-2019: The legislative research outcomes of Regulation of Nanjing Municipality on the Guarantee of National Memorial Activities received multiple honors, including the Outstanding Achievement Award for CTTI Source Think Tanks, the First Prize for Research and Decision-Making Consultation Outstanding Achievement of Jiangsu Province, and the First Prize for Social Science Decision-Making Consultation Outstanding Achievement of Nanjing City.
2019: “Oral History of the Transmission of Historical Memory of the Nanjing Massacre” was selected as one of the “Top Ten Oral History Projects of the Year” by the Communication University of China.
2020: Serving Jiangsu’s “14th Five-Year” Plan and Building the Nanjing International Peace Center was selected as an Outstanding Case of CTTI Source Think Tank Development.
2020: Delivering the “A Lesson Before Going Abroad” and Developing an Educational Version of Think Tank Outcomes was selected as one of the Top Ten Best Practice Cases of Jiangsu Think Tanks for 2020.
2020: Research outcomes related to COVID-19 prevention and control were awarded the First Prize for Jiangsu Think Tank Research and Decision-Making Consultation Outstanding Achievements for 2020.
2020: Human Memory: The Solid Evidence of Nanjing Massacre (two volumes) received the Third Prize of the 16th Jiangsu Provincial Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences.
2020: Journey of Peace: An Oral History of Japanese Friends was awarded the Third Prize of the 15th Nanjing Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences.
2021: Promoting the Implementation of the First Local Legislation on the National Memorial Ceremony was selected as a “2021 Special Case of China Think Tanks” by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Evaluation Studies (CASSES).
