For many foreign students, the Nanjing Massacre is just a cold word in a book, or a miserable scene in a movie before they visit the Memorial Hall. Walking into the Memorial Hall and "touching" the history, many people can really get to know about this history.

On April 24 and 26, 35 foreign students and 4 teachers from the School of International Education, Nanjing University of the Arts visited the Memorial Hall and participated in the exchange activity of Zijin Grass International Peace School. These foreign students, who come from Vietnam, Mongolia, Zambia, Australia and many other countries, said that “They should remember the history to avoid repeating Nanjing Massacre.”

  Stuendets visiting the Memorial Hall

The pieces of gruesome photographs, the valuable cultural artifacts witnessing the bloody period, and the numerous body remains of victims with untold misery and sufferings……The students watched carefully, throwing questions to docent from time to time and listening to the docent’s explanations.

REUBEN CHITA from Zambia wrote in Chinese, "I was very impressed by the visit."

Listen to expert lectures about the Nanjing Massacre

Yang Xiaming, a professor of Jiangsu Administration Institute and translator of Iris Chang’s book The Rape of Nanking, Liu Cheng, a professor of the School of History, Nanjing University and chair of UNESCO Peace Studies, Li Xin, an associate researcher of Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Social Sciences, and Zhang Ping, a lecturer of Nanjing University of Aeronautics And Astronautics delivered lectures to foreign students.

Professor Yang Xiaming delivered a lecture on the International Impact of the Nanjing Massacre, introducing the bombings of Nanjing, news reports about the Nanjing Massacre, and the American responses to the Nanjing Massacre. At that time, 22 foreigners stayed in Nanjing and set up the Nanjing Safety Zone to provide shelter for Chinese refugees to the best of their ability.

  Face-to-face exchange

Ling Xi, deputy curator of the Memorial Hall, attended the closing ceremony of the eighth session of Zijin Grass International Peace School and made a face-to-face exchange with foreign students, encouraging them to be the ambassador of peace and spread the concept of peace to more people around them.

Since most of these foreign students are majored in art and media, Ling Xi, deputy curator of the Memorial Hall, showed to them a seven-minute video clip of the Qingming Festival, which was watched by more than 70 million people online during the Qingming Festival. “There is no border between arts,” Ling Xi said. There are three pieces of music in the video clip. The first song is Missing created by Chinese People's Liberation Army Military Orchestra, and every year, the candlelight activity on the evening of the national public festival begins with this song. The second song is the Song of Horsebeans written by McCallum, an American priest. The song described that the refugees only had horsebeans available for their breakfast, lunch and dinner. The third song is Schindler's List, a violin track, which is poignant and heartbreaking. She expects that the foreign students present will spread the idea of peace through art in the future.
