Art Troupes from Tsinghua University and Eight Other Universities Perform "Ode to Peace"
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, a special concert of the "Ode to Peace" by the Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble of the Student Art Troupe at Tsinghua University was recently held at the New Tsinghua Theatre. The concert was jointly performed by the Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble of the Student Art Troupe at Tsinghua University, in collaboration with traditional Chinese music orchestras from eight other universities, the Tsinghua University Retired Faculty and Staff Choir, the Tsinghua Alumni Choir, and the Tsinghua Affiliated Primary School Choir. Through profound and grand musical language, the concert expressed remembrance for the martyrs, respect for history, and a call for peace.
The concert was conducted by Yuan Bei, a first-class conductor and the permanent conductor of the China Nationalities Orchestra. Ninety-one musicians and fifty-five choral singers jointly performed the large-scale Chinese national orchestral suite “Ode to Peace,” composed by the renowned Chinese composer Zhao Jiping to commemorate the World Anti-Fascist War. This work is the first Chinese national orchestral piece to address the significant historical subject of the Nanjing Massacre. Its musical style is profound, majestic, and filled with hope, standing as a monument in modern Chinese national orchestral compositions.
At the concert, the powerful and undulating music transported the audience into that tragic historical memory. The melody deepened as it flowed through the different sections, depicting the suffering and evil of war, the people's denunciation and resistance, and provoking contemplation on war and peace. The Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble of the Student Art Troupe looked back on national history through traditional art and called for world peace through the language of music.
Zhou Feng, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the Nanjing Municipal Committee and Director of The Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre Victims, Dong Lixin, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression Memorial Hall, and other invitees attended the concert. Before the performance, they engaged in a symposium with representatives of the traditional Chinese music ensemble and students, focusing on the theme "Inheriting the Great Spirit and Discussing a New Era of Peace."
