On the early morning of January 30, Nanjing Massacre survivor Cheng Fubao passed away at the age of 91.Born in Nanjing in 1933, Cheng Fubao’s family of six lived in a rented place in the western part of the city, relying on the income from his father, Cheng Changhe, who struggled to make ends meet by crafting folding fan frames.Even this already difficult life was devastated on December 13, 1937. After the Japanese invasion of Nanjing, Cheng Changhe was killed by Japanese soldiers whileattempting to flee with his family. In the midst of this dire situation, the family had no choice but to hastily bury the father’s body and continue their flight. After his father’s death, the hardships of life came crashing down on Cheng Fubao, his mother, and his three other family members like a landslide. In May 1949, Cheng Fubao enlisted in the military, changing his given name from “Bao”(宝) to “Bao”(保) to symbolize his commitment to defending the nation. His son and grandson later followed in his footsteps by joining the military. Additionally, Cheng Fubao’s sister, Cheng Wenying, also survived the Nanjing Massacre and is alive to this day.
