Survivor of the Nanjing Massacre Yu Changxiang Died
Yu Changxiang, a survivor of the Nanjing Massacre, died on June 7 at the age of 95. Up to now, there are only 55 survivors registered by the Nanjing Aid Association for the Victims of Atrocities by Japanese Invaders.
Yu's father was stabbed to death by invading Japanese soldiers during the massacre. In those days, 10-years-old Yu had a memory. He saw unarmed people beheaded by the Japanese soldiers, raped, robbed... He suffered from a serious mental trauma. He kept this story to himself for decades, until his head turned white.
"I did not want to talk about it. It made me uncomfortable and painful. It was since 2012 when I went to the Memorial Hall that I started talking about it." Since then, Yu had gradually come out of silence and bravely told his personal experience to the public again and again.
In December 2012, Yu was invited to attend testimony rallies in Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Nagasaki, Japan, to tell the Japanese people about his own and his family's misfortunes during the Nanjing Massacre.
Yu Bifu, the name on the wall of the victims' list, was his only place to pay homage to his father. Since 2015, Yu Changxiang had come to the Memorial Hall almost every year to "see" his father, offering flowers and incense.
In recent years, despite his deteriorating health, Yu Changxiang still insisted on attending peace rallies and family offerings at the Memorial Hall.
After Yu passed away, his descendants followed his will and donated his body to public welfare.
