Wang Heng, a survivor of the Nanjing Massacre, died on April 7 at the age of 100. There are only 57 survivors registered by the Nanjing Aid Association for the Victims of Atrocities by Japanese Invaders.

On December 12, 1937, Wang Heng's family lived in a cloth shop near Shuiximen, Nanjing. That night, he was awakened by bursts of gunfire that were getting closer and more intense. Realizingthat the situation was critical, Wang Heng's father led his large familyand fled to the refugee campat Ginling College. Wang Heng recalled a couple whoalso took refuge in the camp with their two children, aged five or six. The man fledfrom home in such a hurry that he took nothing with him. He sneaked home in the night and never came back.

Wang Heng survived and later joined the army, where he was awarded the rank of captainof the Navy. After leaving the army, he successively worked in Jiangsu Mechanical Science Institute and Jiangsu Auto Parts Company. A few years ago, his granddaughter Wang Lianlaunched a Weibo account for him, calling it "Grandpa Wang Heng's Story". She said her grandfather had a strong influence on her. After her grandfather died, she felt a sense of mission to continue to tell people what he had experiencedand what he had witnessed.
