Wu Jiying, a survivor of the Nanjing Massacre, died at home on May 25 at the age of 98. So far, there are only 56 registered survivors of the Nanjing Massacre alive.

Wu was born in 1924 in Jurong, Jiangsu Province. Her poor family sold her to a family surnamed Zhang in Nanjing as a servant. When the Japanese troops entered the city, the Zhang’s family left Nanjing, leaving only a sick old woman taken care of by Wu. One day, two Japanese soldiers came in the back door of Zhang's house. A Japanese soldier stabbed Wu in the left thigh. She was so scared after being stabbed that she took old Lady Zhang out of the house and fled, hiding in a house near a vegetable garden near the Confucious Temple. "A lot of people died near that house, about 13 dead bodies. I was so scared that I called the old woman to hide in the dead. I also hid behind a dead body and pretended to be dead."

When the searching Japanese soldiers left, Wu took the old lady and continued to flee. "Once I met seven old ladies in an alley, and we fled together. The four old ladies running in front were killed by the Japanese soldiers then, and the three behind quickly ran back. They asked us to run to the opposite way together. On the way we met an old woman with white hair, and she asked us to run with her. I ran with her to an American school, which turned out to be a refugee camp. The old lady ran to the door and disappeared. We entered the camp." Wu survived by hiding in a refugee camp.
