On May 18, the International Museum Day, the Exhibition "Sensing the Peaceful · Design for the Memory of Nanjing, as a City of Peace" was launched at the Memorial Hall. “Ning” the character means peace and it also represents the city of Nanjing. “Zai” represented existence and the feeling what was normal. "Ning Zai" is meant to find the existence of peace.
As China's first "International City of Peace", Nanjing's memory of peace "lives" in the mountains, rivers, forests, streets and alleys, buildings and trees. It is everywhere and at your fingertips. This year marks the 85th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre. The exhibition was to call on people not to forget the past of this city and to work together to create a better future for this city.
The exhibition was divided into 8 modules: Field of Contemplation, Image of the City of Peace, Non-physical Wall, Ring of Life, Anonymous Things, Pathway of Sounds, Landscape of Memories and the Epilogue. Through hearing, vision, touch and smell, the exhibition mobilized the visitors to fully perceive the memory of peace in the daily scenery of Nanjing. It also got into the city from the exhibition hall, hold a youth workshop of peace city design and a walking and reading tour of the city, leading the participators to immerse themselves in thinking about the meaning of peace, giving play to the power of the museum.
Chen Tongle, deputy director of exhibition Art Committee of China Museums Association, commented after visiting the exhibition: "The exhibition is unique and has a distinct theme, which is highly integrated with the city of Nanjing. It extends from the exhibition to the whole city area of Nanjing, leading a group of people and influencing a city. Wang Weixing, former director of the Institute of History at the Jiangsu Academy of Social Sciences and a researcher at theInstitute forNationalMemory and International PeaceStudies, said historical memories would become more attractive to young people through this innovative display. In the process of building Nanjing as an International City of Peace, each of us is not a spectator but a participant.
