Zijin Grass International Volunteer David: I Want to Spread this History to the World
On the eve of the eighth National Memorial Day, David, an international volunteer of the Memorial Hall changed his Wechat profile picture into a black-and-white photo of the Memorial Hall to express his memory of the victims of the Nanjing Massacre. He also uploaded a video titled "1937-2021, the Fate of the Two Families of Magee and Xia Shuqin" on his personal social media, which attracted enthusiastic response.
In 2016, David came to Nanjing to study and learned the history of the Nanjing Massacre for the first time. In 2019, recommended by his teacher, he became an international volunteer of the Memorial Hall. Since then, he often narrated the history to foreign visitors in the Memorial Hall, and conveyed the message of history and peace to the world.
The best way to approach a piece of history is to approach the people involved in it. David met Xia Shuqin, a survivor of the Nanjing Massacre. On the eve of the national memorial ceremony in 2021, he and Li Yuhan, great-grandson of Xia Shuqin, had a phone call with Chris Magee, grandson of John Magee, our international friend.
After hearing the descendants of Xia Shuqin and John Magee's family, David said, "Their family histories represent the change of the city of Nanjing. I hope to connect the past and the present, China and the West through the history of the two families, so that more people can understand the history."
