Documentary Panorama Tokyo Trial on Display in Memorial

The painting, 172 meters long and 4 meters high, was created by Mr. Li bin, a famous painter and a special research fellow of the Tokyo Trial Research Center of Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU). The picture shows more than 450 judges, prosecutors, defendants, defense lawyers, witnesses, court staff and other people participating in the Tokyo trial. The total number of characters in the painting is 633 with the repeated included.
Due to limited space, only 72 meters of the 172-meter-long oil paintings are exhibited in the Memorial, which mainly includes four parts: court session, judgment, judges and prosecutors, and the Chinese team.
According to Li Bin, the upper part of the painting presents historical materials through historical pictures and selected court records, while the lower part shapes many court figures through exquisitely drawn portrait.
In the literature document section, selected trial records were presented in three languages. The records help search and verify more than 400 witnesses, and each witness was numbered in the literature document.
The creation of the exquisitely drawn portrait insisted on the basis of the court image information and offered a vivid reproduction of the character's unique posture and appearance.
This brand new historical painting is a close combination of historiography and aesthetics, which was completed by renowned painter Li Bin and his creative team in collaboration with scholars and experts from the SJTU Tokyo Trial Research Center in four and a half years. With the special style of juxtaposing documents and paintings, the whole process of the Tokyo Trial is reproduced comprehensively, vividly and accurately. Mr. Li said the work, which has been expanded in scale and has yet to be completed, remains to be repaired.
Welcome to the end hall of the Three Invincibles (San’ge Bisheng) Exhibition Hall of the Memorial. The exhibition period will end in November 2019.
